13 Different Types Of Coffee

  • Some coffees may look the same but definitely are different in taste.

1. Espresso (not Expresso)

 It is a coffee-making method in which a small amount of nearly boiling water is forced under pressure (expressed) through finely-ground coffee beans, with a coffee machine of course. 
  • They say it sounds simple but is difficult to master. 
  • Espresso is the base for various coffee drinks that we will see in this post.

2. Doppio (Double espresso)
  • It is a double shot (two shots of) Espresso.
  • Place of origin: Italy


3. Ristretto 
  • It is an Espresso shot + half the amount of water.
  • Place of origin: Italy


4. Lungo 
  • It is an Espresso but with much more water, it’s so similar to Americano but Lungo is stronger.
  • Place of origin: Italy


5. Macchiato 
  • It is an espresso-based coffee drink with a small amount of milk, usually foamed. 
  • You can order it as a single or a double. 
  • Fun Fact: In Italian, macchiato means "stained" or "spotted" so the literal translation of caffè macchiato is "stained” or “marked coffee.”


6. Latte 
(If you like milk more than coffee, this is the one for you)
  • A latte is an espresso with lots of milk. 
  • There is no specific rule to how much milk should be in lattes but it has to be more than other coffees.
  • Place of origin: Italy


7. Cappuccino 
  • It contains equal parts of espresso, steamed milk and foamed milk.
  • Place of origin: Italy


8. Flat white 
  • Two shots of Espresso + milk. 
  • It is comparable to a latte, but smaller in volume.
  • Place of origin: Australia/New Zealand.



9. Americano 
  • Espresso + hot water.


10. Mocha 
  • Espresso + milk + chocolate + sometimes whipped cream, depending on the cafĂ©.
  • Other names: Mochaccino.
  • Fun fact: The Mocha coffee beans were named for the port of Mocha (Al Mokha) in Yemen, where the beans were shipped from.


11. Espresso con panna 
(It means espresso with cream in Italian) 
  • Espresso + whipped cream.
  • Place of origin: Italy


12. Romano 
  • Espresso + lemon


13. Affogato 
  • Espresso + vanilla ice cream.
  • It is considered as a drink and a dessert too.
  • Place of origin: Italy.
